I have said this before but I will say it again. The emotion you put into your videos would have raised a smile from Charles Dickens. Himself no slouch when it came to giving emotional renditions of his stories. Well done, the Fanning. Right place right time and then, importantly, made the most of it. Convoy duty was always a difficult task and many never even got that chance. But as they say, they also serve who stand and wait. And without them things would have been much worse.

@wbnc66 Well, as I said. They also serve who stand and wait. And standing and waiting can include making the enemy think of trying their luck elsewhere. 👍

Think you may have mixed up two different events here. It happens to us ancient ones. U-113 was SM U-113 and surrendered to France 20th November 1918. The first Enigma machine did not appear until 1923. I wonder if you were referring to Sub-Lieutenant David Balme of HMS Bulldog who led a boarding party that removed the Enigma coding machine and various codebooks from U-110. This was May 1941. Sub-Lieutenant, later Lieutenant Commander, David Balme survived to the grand old age of 95 dying in 2016. I agree with you about U-boats being a deathtrap. I did read that they had the highest casualty rate of any branch of service during the war. Higher then the Japanese kamikaze casualty rates.
