I did know about this war but it had been sometime since I read about so I was not fully up to speed on it, though I did remember about the siege of Warsaw and how it led to stopping Russia. Lenin falling to reach his goals but claiming victory by changing them reminded me of Khrushchev and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Khrushchev's aim was to get America's missiles out of Turkey and off Russia's doorstep, but because he never stated this as his goal and the missiles in Turkey were removed without anyone being aware of, Khrushchev came across as a loser. He had player chicken and blinked first. As for the "what ifs", long been a favourite of mine, we could have seen France and Great Britain now being an ally of Germany against Soviet Russia in order to stop it moving west? Would America have stepped forward to help, seeing that it could be a problem for them as well as France and Great Britain? And what of other European countries? And what of the communists and socialists in each of these countries? one thing is sure, history and the world would have been very different.

That is true about the Soviets being in poor shape themselves. Of course Germany was not in a much better shape at this time either. What with the various factions vying for power.
