It has been a while since I heard this story but definitely worth the retelling. And the wait. So thanks for that. I remember watching another similar story of a British Army survey which I believe took place between the wars and I think it may have been in Burma. They took great pains to get the contour lines correct but they were having some problems with one area. And as the process was coming to an end there was little chance of getting a survey team up there. Anyway one person came up with a solution and it was finally finished. All were happy with the results until someone noted that if you viewed the map upside down the new contour line looked remarkably like the outline of an elephant. Well you cannot say they did not have a sense of humour.
