  1. I remember this being on the news as well as the Turkish crash. The crash of United Airlines Flight 232 DC10 at Sioux City, Iowa, came about when the number two (tail) engine suffered an uncontained fan disk failure in flight, which damaged all three hydraulic systems and rendered the hydraulic flight controls inoperable. Just as with American Airlines Fight 96 the lack of a cable backup system meant that the flight crew had to use the engines to control the aircraft. The crash at Sioux City led to 111 of the 296 people onboard dying. I remember watching a documentary about it which mentioned how the pilot Captain Al Haynes felt about the lose of those people. But watching the documentary my thoughts were 185 people survived because of what he and the flight crew had done.

  3. I think that would be an excellent story. As I said, the pilots wanted everyone to survive, and understandably so. But when you see the film footage of the crash the fact that so many did survive, the majority, is a testament to the skill of him and the other flight crew.
