Having read about Poe I can only say how unlucky he was. Talk about suffering for your art. I have found peoples various interpretations of his poem The Raven interesting. To me it is not some dark Gothic style story but a love story. He has lost someone dear to him and he is hoping that the raven is a messenger and has come to tell him she has passed onto a better place. I do not know if he was aware of it but one of Americas native people used to believe that ravens were a messenger from the afterlife. As for his drinking. I am reminded of the actor Sterling Hayden who once said during an TV interview he would drink when he was writing. He never understood why but he found he could write better when he did. I do wonder in Poe's case whether writing brought so much emotion out of him it was his way of dealing with it.
