  4. Knowing a little bit about the problems of navigation during this period means that this does not a surprise to me. The smallest of errors can leave you miles away from where you think you target actually is. And I knew about the bombing of Switzerland by mistake. Long range navigation was still very rudimentary in those days. And it was compounded for the British because night bombing meant there was no points of reference. This is why the Royal Air Force Bomber Command introduced the Pathfinder Group. They were tasked with finding and marking the targets for the bombers. During the Battle of France in 1940 there was an air raid on a German town which was quickly blamed on the Allies, except that the locals all mention the markings on the aircraft were all German. A navigation error meant they had bombed one of their own towns by mistake.
