Everyone thinks of the big ships but it is always the small ships which see the most action. The attack on the submarine by USS Ward is depicted in the film Tora, Tora, Tora. It was not realised until recently that a photograph taken by a Japanese aircrewman taken during the attack actually shows a torpedo track from a submarine which got into the harbour.

@shawnr771 Thanks for that, Shawn. Just shows that it does not matter how long ago something happened there is always the possibility of new evidence adding to what we know.

@shawnr771 I am pretty much the same as you. When I did my archaeology degree I did a history module which was about the English king King Stephen during the civil war in the 12th century. There was a famine during the war which some had put down as being caused by the war. But reading through various descriptions of what was happening I realised that the famine was not caused by the war. Between 1315 and 1321 there were what was referred to as years without summers. Meaning it was cold and wet. I knew that there had been a dip in the yearly temperature for those years all that rain had caused crops to rot in the fields, which in turn had caused several famines in them years. I happened to have a chart in one of my archaeology books which covered the annual temperature for the last 2000 years. And there I saw that the yearly temperature during King Stephen's civil war was only just a fraction higher then the later 14th century famines. So I was able to show through this new evidence that the weather and not the war had caused the famine. The history tutor remarked that he had never thought of that. I already knew about the 14th century famine and it was the similarity between the descriptions for both that led me to believe what was happening then and what had happened during Stephen's reign looked pretty much the same.
