I am always fascinated by stories like these. How hugely important events can be triggered by such tiny events. "for want of a nail" as the saying goes.

Poland has rather an unfortunate history with its neighbour to the east.

Actually I am surprised no one questioned why this cannon was allowed to be used. The problems with this method of construction had been known about for centuries. I seem to remember that they usually surrounded it by steel bars placed length ways and held in place with steel straps which were then wrapped around the barrel. I am sure that sort of build had been superseded long before this incident. So why was it allowed to be used? Speaking of guns. The Battle of Agincourt was 25 October 1415. This is where the English archers defeated the French knights. But some of the French wounded, and possibly even dead, were shot with a very early handgun. It was basically a metal tube with a touch hole at the breach end which was attached to a long steel spike. There was not many but here at the height of the archers fame were the seeds of what would replace the bow. And one more thing I hope you will find interesting. The Battle of Trafalgar was 21 October 1805. One of the most important sea battles in history. Fought under sail. But on March 28 1803 the steam powered boat, the Charlotte Dundas, sailed on a canal in Scotland. Again the new there at the height of the old. In fact this event nearly changed history a lot sooner then it did. There was a plan to use steam ships to tow fire ships which would have been used to attack the combines French and Spanish fleets, but it was judge that the technology was not ready. So the plan was abandoned and Nelson had his day.
