People may be intelligent but mobs are not. In a mob even the best of people can commit the worst of acts.

Several people have said that intelligent people avoid mobs, which is an interesting observation. The problem is that too often they believe that because they are intelligent they are clever enough to be able to use mobs for their own use. Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre was a French lawyer who decided to use the mob for his own political ends. He was a member of the Committee of Public Safety. During the Reign of Terror this committee was responsible for at least 300,000 suspects were arrested; 17,000 were officially executed, and perhaps 10,000 died in prison or without trial. Mobs are like riding a hungry tiger. At some point you will become its next meal. On the 28 July 1794 Robespierre died under the Guillotine just as many others had. Yes I agree the intelligent should avoid the mob. But as I said, even the best of people can commit the worst of acts.
