  2. Assuming they were going in to attack then their aim would be to get into position to mount that attack. The different types of aircraft such as torpedo bombers would come in low, while dive bomber would come in at high level. It was not unusually to attack at the same time so as to split the fire from the antiaircraft guns. You don't see attacks like that today because with modern technology it is not needed. The WW2 1000 bomber raid would today be one aircraft and usually just one guided bomb or missile. ~And that aircraft would hit the target. Hope that helps

  3. I shouldn't think so. After all the captain being the man-on-the-spot must make the final decision. That is what he is trained to do. Besides, they gave him a medal for what he accomplished.

  4.  @TheHistoryGuyChannel  Yes it is quite possibly a dud. I had wondered if they automatically loaded up with AP shells as a matter of course until told to change shell types. I know that Japanese ships were very regimented, and quite brutally so, so there was no room for initiative.

  5. I do wonder if, like Taffy 3, the Japanese fired armour piercing shells rather then HE. If it was HE then you would expect the bow of the submarine to have been blown off. Well at least the Japanese captain did not have to sail backwards which seemed to be a speciality of the US Navy at that time.
