There was a similar problem in Britain with girls painting watch and clock dials suffering from the radiation. In a similar vein girls working at match factories in London in the 1880's suffered from the white phosphorous used in the making of the matches destroying their jaw bones. The problem was that the safer red phosphorous was much more expensive. Eventually through pressure and others using the more expensive red phosphorous the main producer of matches using white phosphorous changed over to red. The denials by the company reminded me of the tobacco companies doing the same things with regards the connection between smoking and cancer. This despite the connection being proven back in the 1930's.
