To be fair the previous government had overcooked the economy in a desperate attempt to win the election. The railways were run into the ground is WW2 and in dire need for money which was not there. The government used Dr Robert Beeching's report as the excuse they needed to make close many lines in a desperate attempt to sort out the mess the economy was in.
