I remember that at the time there was a lot in the news about why the Lockheed aircraft was chosen rather then the Boeing aircraft. Especially when the costs skyrocketed. There was also a lot of talk about problems with the aircraft, something which was not helped when, during it being shown the the press, part of its main undercarriage fell off. And there was talk back then about the wings. Further speculation about its choice was fueled when the airforce general in charge of the project retired to a job with Lockheed.
