The English use of the longbow goes back much further and were in use long before they met the Welsh. Archery training included hitting a target laid flat on the ground at a distance which was achieved by using the curved flight of the arrow with the arrow dropping onto the target. This simulated hitting a man on a castle wall.

This fixation with armour piercing has excluding the fact that an arrow does not need to pierce the armour to be disabling or even fatal wound a knight. The very act of being struck by an arrow with enough force can cause blunt force trauma which can kill. Post WW2 the French army did a study into the use of body armour and came to the conclusion that a force of 80 joules on the human body would be fatal. A bodkin arrow has shown it can exert a force of 128 joules. So even without penetrating a knights armour there was enough force exerted to cause serious injury or even death if the knight was struck on the head or over the heart. And English archers were trained to shoot at the head and the heart. So the arrow does not need to penetrate the armour to kill
