  2. As one of those who live on the other side of the pond I found your explanation very interesting. I did watch something about the lead up to prohibition on YouTube and they mentioned that farms would have a barrel of what you call hard cider outside the farmhouse. Anyone leaving the farmhouse would get themselves a mug of cider when they left. You have to wonder how many farmhands would find any excuse to go to the farmhouse just to get a drink of cider. And also how drunk must they have been by the end of the day.
