I saw a report on the use of flywheels to power buses several years ago. On the face of it it looks like a good option. It could be powered up while it was sat in the bus station. And this power could be topped up by tapping into the brakes and feeding power from that to get the flywheel back up to speed. Energy which otherwise would be wasted. One of the big concerns was want happens to a flywheel weighing several tonnes if it is involved in an accident and it breaks free. Just imagine the carnage caused by it running out of control in a populated area. One solution would have been to put it in a safety cage to reduce the possibility of it breaking free. But that would have taken up about a third of the bus. Which would mean the revenue generated by each journey would be reduced by one third. So any financial advantage gained by using a flywheel would be lost by the much reduced income. There are undoubtedly areas where a flywheel will be beneficial. But transport looks like not being one of them.
