The number of people killed or wounded by a bayonet is tiny. Something like 0.01% of all casualties are caused by bayonets. And that has not changed since the American Civil War. Soldier prefer to shoot the enemy because it's safer then trying to stab them with a bayonet. For one thing they may well be trying to kill you at the same time. In WW1 when the British Troops were ordered to fix bayonets and charge the enemy but most would sooner shoot them instead.

@SaugusZouave In an actual combat situation during WW1 British soldiers would sooner shoot an enemy rather then stab him with a bayonet. Even with a bayonet fixed. Shooting someone is one thing. Actually stabbing that person is totally different. And there is a good possibility that you do not kill your opponent, or incapacitate them sufficiently to stop them being a threat. As for rifles being inefficient part of that is down to training such as not blazing away with you M16 over top of a wall while you remain hidden behind it. Instead use controlled fire and make sure your aiming at a target. This is why so much effort has been put in to making sure the rifle has better sights. And they also found that most of the killing is done by just a handful of people. The rest, as mentioned, were just shooting in the general direction of the enemy. Which is why training has changed in many armies. Your praise for the bayonet while pointing out how wasteful of rifles would suggest a return to using the spear. It would save a fortune in lead. 😊 Please take that last remark with the humour it was intended.
