If it was a compass it was probably scratched out because either the photographer did not know it was a compass or because he did not want people assuming it was a watch.

Back in the 60s Australia wanted to encourage people to migrate to Australia. To help with this they had something called assisted passage whereby most of the cost of moving to Australia was borne by the Australian government. This was aimed mostly Britain as Australia only wanted white people to migrate there.

As many men still did not have the vote they may have received more sympathy if they had pressed for universal suffrage.

Not sure if I want to know the answer. Somethings are more enjoyable not knowing the answer.

I know that in early movies people wore white gloves to make their hands stand out because of the low quality of the film at that time.

To change Fahrenheit to Centigrade just deduct 30 and the divide by two. So 70 - 30 / 2 = 20. Okay Not spot on for scientific purposes but for your weather it will be fine.

I have wondered why the Soviet Union did not make more of the US missiles in Turkey. Especially after removing its missiles from Cuba. This failure cost Khrushchev the leadership because the Soviet Union had lost face. Another failure was not telling the Soviet ambassador to the UN what was going on in Cuba. So imagine how he felt having derided the US claims only to be presented with the photographic evidence

Before WW1 a railway company in Britain painted its passenger locomotives royal blue. But when the war broke out this colour was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for the dazzle camouflage. This meant that the passenger locomotives were left painted in their undercoat, which, ironically, was battleship grey.

America should also stop using volumetric measurements for their recipes as well. I have seen a trained chef measure out breadcrumbs for a recipe which he repeated three times and each time the weight was different.

I do know about the origins of the hand inside a jacket or waistcoat going all the way back to Aeschines and the restriction of one hand. My interest in this came about because I have seen Victorian group photographs where the most senior man in the photograph placed his hand inside his jacket. I remembered about Napoleon and wonder if he was the originator or whether it predated him Although Aeschines talked about the restriction of one hand it is interesting that he actually restricted his arm and has left his hand exposed.

Actually the end was coming for airships. Despite the proclaimed luxury of the cabins they were in fact very sparse and basic. When caught in a storm they could rapidly rise and plummet hundreds of feet in a matter of moments, terrifying both passengers and crew. The other thing is that they could carry only a very limited number of passengers, especially compared to an ocean liner. Not to mention the amount of cargo an ocean liner could carry. And with pilots like Alcock and Brown in 1919 and then Charles Lindbergh in 1927 it was obvious that aircraft, not airships, were the future. In 1921 the airship R38 crashed into the River Humber less then half a mile from where I live. My late father used to know when of the men who went out into the Humber to help with the rescue and recovery of the died. At the time of the crash she was the biggest airship in the world.
