Wrong Indians. The term came about through a misunderstanding between early European settlers in America and the natives. The American Indians would exchange gifts before trading but the settlers didn't do that, they just traded and thought the Indians just did the gift giving as a way to get back what they had just given. Ironically if you go back in history Europeans would also give gifts before trading.
