I think we can agree that Russia is well beyond embarrassed. The old Soviet army would have had tanks in the middle of Kyve within days if not hours of the invasion starting. Having said that the standard Russian soldier is no brighter that his Soviet counterpart. During the invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 Czech students would go up to Soviet Russian tank crews and ask them why they had invaded a fellow Warsaw Pact country, the Russians were just as clueless then as their modern peers are today as to why they were there, and while the students were talking to the tank crew one of their number would go to the back of the tank and set fire to the external fuel tank.

@David-ni5hj I'm talking about post WW2. If you look at Hungary and Czechoslovakia they had learned lessons from WW2. Finland was after Stalin had purged the vast majority of his officer corps. So at that point they had lost the necessary expertise. This is why the German invasion sent panic in the Russian force. No one had any idea of how to deal with it.
