Catherine Hayes was given the worst form of execution when it comes to being burnt at the stake. Where the wood was placed low down so that the person was actually burnt to death. The version used more often was where the wood was stacked up above the condemned persons head so they actually died on smoke inhalation rather then the fire. There were variations added in. In this one they unsuccessfully tried to straggle her with a rope before the fire took her. But more usually they would have the condemned person stand on a stool and they would tie a cord around around neck and the stake. Once the fire was started the stool would be pulled with a rope and the person died of strangulation. In the case of Catherine Murphy her execution was the same as this Catherine but she had the cord around her neck and stood on a stool. She was not supposed to have the cord around her neck but the executioner took it on himself to do so as a protest at this form of execution. And this was the last time it happened.
