Nimori Kandara It depends on your definition of backwards. They have over twice the population of France yet its GDP is less then half that of France. So economically that may be true. But they have a rich culture and many Russians would be able to recognise pictures of their famous poets, artists, musical composers and writers such as Leo Tolstoy. So in that respect they are not backwards. Their biggest problem is that they have rarely been led by decent political leaders who can being out the best in their country and its people. And their present leader is no exception to this.

The trawlers in the incident came from the city of Kingston upon Hull. The Hull Docks Museum actually has a damaged piece of one of the trawler which was hit by the Russians. The Russians apparently mistook them for Japanese torpedo boats.

Luis Aldamiz Many of Japans warships at this time were built in British shipyards. So it could have been possible for the Japanese to have been out in the North Sea if they had been there to pick up a new batch of torpedo boats. But for them to do so it would mean the British would have allowed the Japanese to leave port, something which would have been highly unlikely. The quality of the Russian ships was very bad, as was the seamanship of the Russian sailors. And having to sail around the world, the Russians were not allowed to use the British run Suez Canal because of the Dogger Bank incident, meant that the Russian ships were now not fit for battle and the Russian crews were in need of extended R&R. Also the Russian admiral in charge had died during the voyage which was kept from everybody, even senior officers. This meant that the second in command had no idea he was actually now in command. Murphy's Law is if it can go wrong it will go wrong. Sods Law, is it goes wrong in the worst possible way. I think this is a good example of Sods Law.

Rozhestvensky did not fire on the British trawlers. That was down to many of hist incompetent captains who would fire on anything. Even when there was nothing there.

The same thing happened with the Italians in North Africa against the British. Despite the British forces being much smaller they captured the Italian army which invaded Egypt taking hundreds of thousands of prisoners. Italian supplies were so short they did not even have water

Well we have all had leaders who were last in the que when it came to brains, honesty or all those other things you should expect. I have, for sometime, thought that just locking up anyone who want to be in politics would just save so much time.
