  2. The Russians have never got that NATO is for the defence of the West. During the Cold War the Soviets/Russians became convinced that this was all a bluff and that NATO was going do the attacking. So their plans changed and they set up a defensive line in Poland to stop NATO, sacrificing East German and Polish forces, and then they would counter attack.
