I do know about this incident and another similar event where a French pilot shot his own aircraft down during a test of an air-to-air missile. As with the F-11 the plot had fired the missile and then dived below it. The missile then locked onto the French aircraft and shot it down.

Another enjoyable and informative video. Thanks. I did read about some non Russian Soviet military supply drivers who got drunk drinking the antifreeze used in their trucks. Some of them actually got their eyesight back.

@anzaca1 British sailors serving aboard USS Robin, HMS Victorious when it was loaned to the US Navy, did mention that the USN sailors indulged in a bit of home brew. Where there's a will, or thirst, where's a way.

@davydovua It may be dark but it is true. Several of them did go blind.

So all these naval officers were responsible for their own deaths. Shame others had to die with them.

@Mis73rRand0m I sometime wonder if we put as much effort into making alcoholic drinks into everything else. At this point may head hurts and I have a drink

I had read about soviet fighter pilots who would report problems with icing and were told to use the deicer to clear it. Then when the landed they would drain off the 'used' deicing fluid and took it to the officers mess for that evening consumption. Non-Russians in the army would drink the antifreeze used in the radiators t their trucks. Some even got their eyesight back.

I knew of this incident as I had read of it in Group Captain Peter Townsend's book Duel of Eagles. When the Stuka came up against the British Royal Air Force they did struggle. One trick the Spitfires did was as each Stuka dived down a Spitfire would follow it shooting at it as it did so. These were called Stuka Parties. Over Malta one Spitfire pilot was so intent in shooting down his Stuka he forgot the one following and was himself shot down. Fortunately he did survive to fight another day. German E Boat crews, S boat to the Germans, called the boats the Stukas of the Sea. The British Royal Navy called theirs the Spitfire of the Sea.

There has been occasions when aircraft have shot themselves down. But never on such a regular basis.

They didn't have one as this was a US thing

I remember this story being reported on the British news. It caused some concern in the West that this may be some sort of ploy by the Russians to launch a surprise attack on the West. When the real story started to come out the concern changed to one of worry that the Russians could not control their own ships.
