  1. I knew of this incident as I had read of it in Group Captain Peter Townsend's book Duel of Eagles. When the Stuka came up against the British Royal Air Force they did struggle. One trick the Spitfires did was as each Stuka dived down a Spitfire would follow it shooting at it as it did so. These were called Stuka Parties. Over Malta one Spitfire pilot was so intent in shooting down his Stuka he forgot the one following and was himself shot down. Fortunately he did survive to fight another day. German E Boat crews, S boat to the Germans, called the boats the Stukas of the Sea. The British Royal Navy called theirs the Spitfire of the Sea.
