I have always wondered about the pistol grip as, compared to others, it is a rather odd angle. Then while watching this video I realised that is about where you would hold it if it had a stock as with a rifle. So the question is why would you do that? It's not like pistol grips were unknown. It seems an odd thing to do.

@aussiviking604 That's right. Everything was in canisters. But as many things were still new with regards paratroopers it is possible that they originally planned to do that and changed it later. I thought that was odd that they did not carry weapons with them as surely if you are parachuting into a battle the last thing you want to do is then scramble around looking for your weapon. They did suffer badly in Crete when parachuting onto the British airfields.

@Nobody___ Yes, I have this feeling that California may not have been aware of it.😊

@holgerharmuss1207 Just had a thought of them spinning around like a merry-go-round. Unlike British or American paratrooper German paratroopers had no control of their chutes. The basically just hung there beneath them, a very odd setup. Their main aim was to make sure they faced the way they were going to land by twisting their bodies around. So anything which was going to interfere with that was probably to be avoided. Especially as up to 25% could end up injured with a bad landing.

@realQuiGon Interesting thought. I Did wonder about them jumping with the MG 34 or MG 42 but I have a feeling they may well have been in canisters.

@aussiviking604 Interesting thought, there. Nice one.

@jonmeray713 Holger Harmuss mentioned the same thing and, though it has been sometime since I read about this, it does sound familiar. But as Holger Harmuss pointed out there was the problem in that they end up spinning around. Which means you would end up spraying bullets all over the place. Good chance of hitting your own men in that case.

@bob445566DE Just thought about the FN which had what we would think of as a normal grip and it was used by paratroopers. Even without the folding stock.

@aussiviking604 First time I read about it I did wonder why they did not give them better chutes. Am I wrong in thinking that German aircrew used a chute similar to Allied aircrew?
