Some fascinating history of the early days of the AR-15/M-16. I knew some of it but here learned about the how it became adopted and the changes made. One thing I had read but was corrected here was one of the reasons the M-16 was adopted by the US. The story I read was that they were being given out to various groups being supported by the US and someone noted that as they were so good why was the US not using them. One of the early buyers of the M-16 was the British Army, before the US Army I believe but not the US airforce, who bought 10,000 of them. They were used by the Gurkhas, because of their small stature, as well special and elite forces such as the SAS and SBS. You would like to think that whoever took their eye off the ball at Fairchild suddenly found they were spending more time with their families. Or put in charge of some very important work such as counting paperclips or something.
