  1. Someone once worked out that since the American Civil War less then 0.001% of all casualties came from the use of the bayonet. Even during bayonet charges soldiers would sooner shoot the enemy then stab him with the bayonet. There are several reasons for this, not least of which is the other guys trying to do the same to you. Shooting him is much safer.
