  1. In 1914 German troops came under fire at long range, often up to 1,000 yards. The Germans were convinced that they were coming under fire from machine guns but they were actually being fired on by infantry with the SMLE. Range, accuracy and rapid fire was the big changes from the Boer War. One of the big advantages of the SMLE was that the bolt traveled a much shorter distance then any of its contemporaries which greatly helped with rapid fire.
