It does have a safety of sorts. If you look at the instructions it says 1) Pull the trigger 2) Be no where near it when it goes off. 3) After the battle come back and reload. 4) If it does not fire leave it about a week before returning. So the same instruction as you get with fireworks really

You would have to make damn sure you were pointing it at the right people. Once you pull that trigger there's no going back.

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

The swivel gun, which was also mounted in the tops masts, was much more reliable as it was a proven technology, was easily reloaded and was already in use already working fine. And a whiff of grapeshot onto the enemies deck would have proven just as devastating. Having said that it was well ahead of its time as area denial weapons which work on the same principle of multiple rounds inside a barrel are in use today. It was just ahead of its time.
