  1. As an absinthe drinker none of this is new to me. But I have to complement you on your research. Absinthe was never banned in Britain as it was never as popular as it was on the the continent. The thing with setting the absinthe sugar alight is more recent. But as it was absinthe flavoured vodka and not real absinthe setting fire to it is a kindness. Degas's painting Absinthe was originally called In A Café but somehow the name was changed in England to Absinthe.
