  1. There was an Arthur who rode with kings but not a King Arthur. So he was possible that he likely a warrior. Though it is equally possible he had a different role. Maybe an advisor. The British historian Gildas, who lived not long after Arthur's time, does not mention him. As Arthur would have been British as well it would be odd that Gildas did not mention him if Arthur was a king.
