  1. That is definitely a video to watch. Poland released Warsaw Pact plans several years ago, after the end of the Soviet Union, and according to those plans the Soviets were to pull back into Eastern Poland while the Poles held a defensive line which stretched across Poland. The idea was that the Poles would stop NATO, and suffer the casualties, then the Soviets would counter attack. Russia tried to block the plans release but Poland went ahead and released them. I don't remember reading if this Soviet/Warsaw Pact plan was a counter to NATO's counter attack or a plan in its own right. NATO had made it clear that what their plans were so it is possible the Soviets thought it was a bluff and that NATO would be the ones to attack. This could have left NATO sat in West Germany waiting for the Warsaw Pact forces to attack while Soviet forces were in Eastern Poland waiting for the NATO attack.

  2. During Ronald Reagan's time as president there were a number of top US officers who thought a war with Russia was winnable even though it would mean the deaths of one in three Americans. They thought that this was a price worth paying. You can imagine that there were those in Soviet Russia who thought the same. In fact we know there were Soviet plans to attack Alaska when the Soviets discovered the early warning system there was not NBC protected. Fortunately the West got news of this attack and took steps to protect Alaska and warned off the Soviets.
