  1. The Stingray was originally a drone aimed at replacing manned naval aircraft used in the attack and fleet defence role. Only later did the idea of making it instead an unmanned tanker come about. I do wonder if there was to much opposition to the original role and rather then having an expensive white elephant on it hands the US Navy opted for the change in role. But drones will take over from manned aircraft and as these are smaller and lighter, no crew means no need for the other paraphernalia needed such as ejection seat, survival equipment et cetera. This could mean more drones per carrier or, more likely, smaller carriers. For one thing with no aircrews needed then there will be a smaller number of people per carrier. Not just the lack of aircrew but all that it would involve such as accommodation, supplies and so forth. So smaller carriers. There is another possibility and that is we would get a multi role ships with drones, anti ship and surface to surface missiles, air defence and other roles.
