  1. That's true. Its on par with the heroic battle of Thermopylae with the Spartans holding off, (but being defeated) by the Persians in 480 BC. Fortunately the result was different, but only just.

The point is, there was a sacrifice made by (mostly Spartans) who delayed the Persians long enough so the Greeks and their allies could regroup. That's really all you need to know. The other important point is that within a couple of years the Persians were completely defeated and did not occupy that region again. A point you won't hear made by many historians is that the Greeks and Spartans had a huge advantage because of their higher IQ, compared to Persians. A fact that remains to this day
