One of the threats of AI, so we hear, is that jobs will disappear. so much so that the government will have to implement some kind of basic income. It doesn't have to be this way. Before the obsession with reducing costs, and outsourcing everything possible, HMRC, banks, commercial companies, used to employ real people to deal with the public. Because they were employees, they could be trained to multi-task, not only ansering the phones to deal with customer queries, but doing other useful work as well. It's called "a proper job".
Call centres can't offer that service, they only do one thing, and the results are obvious to all of us. It doesn't work, and they don't care.
