@pavelow235 Americans(formally south african born) invented self driving electric Tesla's. That is actually incorrect. Tesla's aren't yet self driving, just heavily assisting. There currently are other non-American car companies with more advanced selfdriving capable cars, though none for now fully selfdriving.

@nick4506 You can't do that anywhere? If you do it, the owner of that driveway can just have the vehicle towed at the costs of the owner of the vehicle, so no one parks in front of a driveway.

@nick4506 Then that is a problem regarding your local laws, not a problem of zoning. The streets might indeed not be set up currently to deal with that, but that is exactly a consequence of the way zoning was done. It isn't that it can't be done, considering here in Europe there isn't a really a problem with it (in most places).

@HelloWorld-yq9yy Not really, you just need to ensure proper public transport within the city (as sshould always be the case) and a could public transport connection with these spillover area's. Also if you just let the city sprawl, you still would increase the car dependency without a large extention of the public transport.

@nick4506 Well, you can put parking space underneath a commercial building, that could be a solution. In the end if you want to change something, you'll have to start somewhere. And unfortunately the infrastructure will not be changed as long as the zoning (and the actual use) doesn't change.

Personally I'd say that larger (electric) busses are preferable to tram/lightrail/... those rails make the streets less appealing to walk and bike. In fact I believe one quarter of biking accidents in some city was due to the rails of these systems. And ofcourse tramlike busses would be much more flexible in terms of changing routes etc.

@ColonelSandersLite You could still create some major roads in the hexagon system, even if this means you'd need to cut through some hexagons. You only want a few major roads anyway. Moreover speed in cities is better low than high, there is a trend (in non-complete car centered societies) to lower the speed in cities or even ban cars entirely from the cities center. This constant turning also makes people be more aware and less likely for people to lose attention. We've plenty of examples that square grids don't necessarily help for faster travel time unless the traffic rate isn't that high. 35mph for half a mile is nothing special and definitely handle these kind of turns. Moreover here your main road (if we don't cross hexagons) only cross with another road, creating less problems with mixing the traffic flows. Also we can vary the size of these hexagon blocks, one size could for example be 1/4-1/3rd of a mile. Yes, you then might need to create some extra roads inside the hexagon, but I could envision a cull du sace type system with smaller roads that sees little traffic inside the hexagon.

@Zaydan Naufal Sure, but HK is in a position where this isn't really possible. Obviously if you get to a certain density point you are going to sprawl out more, but then we are already talking about a large amount of people. And at a certain point you just let it spillover to other neighbouring regions while creating good public transport connections to them and let them start increasing their density instead.

It makes sense since it is easier to implement than eg. hexagonal grids. That however says nothing about whether it is more efficient or not.
