  2. The fighting in Andivka started in 2014. There are rail and road junctions near and in the town that if Ukrainian soldiers were not occupying it would ease Russian logistics. Andivka is a strategic key to the Donetsk Oblast. At this point taking before the March Russian elections will make Putin look good in propaganda. Ukraine also has a Bahkmut problem here. If they try to hold onto it too long they risk losing too many lives over a piece of ground. Some Ukrainians were critical of the extended defense of Bahkmut and the commanders. Staying too long in Andivka could have the same effect. No matter how many Russians they take with them. Ukraine simply does not have the number of soldiers Russia has. It can not afford to waste them. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
