One of the reasons of the thawing of Vietnam and US relations is the proximity of Vietnam to the disputed areas of the South China sea. I had a history teacher infer once that part of the reason for the US involvement in the Vietnam war was the oil located in the South China sea. The oil in the Spratlys has been known about for years but the feasibilty and cost of doing so might not have been profitable then but now different story. Adding a non communist Vietnam to the Phillipines and Brunei would have given the US a large area and allies to base operations out of.

@VT-mw2zb In todays wars it is false pride fueled by propaganda. I believe it was Goebbels who remarked that if he had control of the media he could convince the population to go to war. We see it all too often today.
