I was stationed in Korea in the late 1980s . We were issued the M1911A1 and alot of us chambered rounds when on duty, we probably were not supposed to but that is the way it was. Most people generally used the thumb safeties. Although some used half cock and a few lowered the hammer manually. It was mostly a matter of preference. My was cocked with the thumb safety as the design is such that during the act of drawing the pistol and bringing it to the ready pushing the safety down to off is a natural movement process. Unlike some other types of semi autos with the safety on the slide that has to be rotated upwards. This adds the movement of your thumb upwards and then back down to get a grip. In my opinion I like M1911 thumb safety better than those up on the slide. It is easier for me. Best style I really like so far is a striker fired pistol with just a grip safety and a small trigger safety. The Springfield XD. Draw it squeeze the grip safety finger on the trigger squeeze No thumb gymnastics.
