@lefr33man There were plans by the Allies for CAT guided anti ship bombs. The thinking was that a cat would guide the bomb to a solid surface because of their so called aversion to water. Lots of stupid ideas on both sides.

@lefr33man Its the same stuff they are smoking now. We just get to know about it. My theory is that if the Axis had won WW2, We would be seeing SECRET WEAPONS OF THE ALLIES on Nazitube. Where commentators would speculate if they had managed to get this or that into production it would have changed the outcome of the war.

@freedomvigilant1234 Actually there is at least one case from the late 1980s, where an M16A1 did just that. A US soldier serving in the Sinai peace keeping force. After guard duty and a failing to properly clear his weapon. Went to the guard force barracks. Climbed up on the upper bunk, sitting with his feet hanging down. Rifle across his thighs. Reached for his cleaning kit. The rifle slid off his legs and dropped buttstock first. He reached to grab the weapon and leaned forward. He missed grabbing the weapon. It it hit buttstock first. The rifle discharged, hitting him in the head killing him. Investigation showed that the weapon was on SAFE. I was a unit armorer in the US Army. We were alerted to this problem through our monthly preventative maintenance magazines. In addition, Our unit did retraining on clearing procedures. One of the changes made it mandatory that all weapons clearing was to be overseen by NCOs.

You know he could possibly be religious or does not want to offend people who are in his audience. Who believe that doing that is a bad thing to do. Probably does not tell yall to stop for the same reason. Knows that it will just get worse.

@immikeurnot The firing floats just enough in the bolt on the cotter pin. That when struck significantly hard on the buttstock it can happen. Although in general a freak accident. There is another incident in west Texas. A hunters rifle, I do not know the brand or condition of the rifle, fell off a tailgate of truck. It discharged and killed a man named Stephen Fromholtz. So it can happen. I know of two incidents in my lifetime.

@chilled viper Yes there are better rifles out there. That makes sense for the Marines, Special Ops, etc. For the rank and file the M4/M16 is a good enough CHEAP rifle. The military already had plenty of parts, trained armorers and maintenance personel. The cost to switch over to any rifle comes not only with the price tag of each individual rifle but the maintenance, upkeep, and costs of retraining personel and adding an additional logistical supply chain. The military is going to use the M4/M16 platform for many more years because they got a bunch of em and the parts and ammo to go with them. In the case of the M16 platform close to 50 years.
