@ryancook6452 You are correct. They are fitted with a bore evacuator. That was erroneously called a muzzle brake by non armor trained personnel.

Not reliable? Smooth bore 120mm Rheinmettal attached to an Abrams tank firing a fin stablized discarding sabot depeleted uranium penetrators extremely accurately at ranges up to 4000m during Operation Desert Storm.

The US military experimented with 12 gauge shotgun shells using flechettes in Vietnam. They could not justify the cost of the ammo over the less than satisfactory wound characteristics. Flechettes are very tiny darts. Given their high rate of speed, they tend to go straight through a target causing less than adequate wounds unless you hit something vital. Or you are hit with a whole lot of them at the same time. Think M67 90mm recoilless rifle Anti Personnel Round. Then you are Swiss cheese. The temporary and permanent wound cavities are extremely small when compared to a rifle or pistol caliber cartridges. Three round bursts from the Steyr AUG that was originally supposed to fire flechettes would help. The amount of damage from a non life threatening wound is simply not sufficient to end the fight of an enemy soldier. Typically small wounds tend to close back over quickly. In most cases you want to wound your enemy. It takes two more to carry him off the field of battle. Thereby reducing the number of defenders. Less defenders the less the number of bullets being shot back at you and your buddies.

@viciousslayer For covering large open areas. Yes. A command detonated claymore mine can cover a gully or ravine that can not be hit by direct fire, or as a last ditch defense weapon to break contact from a larger enemy force that is pursuing you. I would not want to run with 90mm recoilless rifle.
