This is something one learns in university: "alienation" has been a central topic of literature -- poetry, fiction, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and the arts generally -- in every era, beginning at latest in the 1920s, and continuing into at latest the 1960s.

Often parents made promises that they didn't know they couldn't fulfill, and didn't know that the world didn't intend to. One should take responsibility for one's ignorance, not blame the world for it. I have no idea what "future" you were told you would have; but I do know who is at fault for believing it. Yes: self-pity is avoiding that reality -- it's always someone else's fault. Worse, it is all the fault of an entire specific generation, even though that FANTASY is demolished by actual reality. A more pertinent question is this: How many of the January 6 insurrectionists -- a crime the Founders charged as TREASON, and rendered the sentence for it as DEATH -- were from the poor put-upon generations that was confronted by the same reality as all prior generations but instead of dealing with that reality whines as it wallows in self-pity and put all the blame on the ENTIRE "Boomer" generation. And then they include in that category people who WERE NOT of the "Boomer" generation -- all because of their AGE. The "Boomers" are blamed for US involvement in Vietnam, even though that began BEFORE the "Boomer" generation's first member was born. That is why I continue to attack the STUPIDTY of the morons who smugly declare that education only matters if it's a "jobs program" -- having no awareness that life isn't limited to jobs and money. It is disheartening for those of use who hoped for better than my generation had it, only to see them subsequent generations whine that everything isn't handed to them on a silver platter -- and, beneath all that, ranting AGAINST education. PHILISTIMES and BARBARIANS who haven't the first clue as to the meaning of "citizenship" in a society with other citizens.

That isn't quite accurate: John Adams believed that the basic human flaw is greed. (In the "Bible" it's one of the "Seven Deadly Sins".) That's why he established a system -- separation of powers -- that would constrain greed. Thus, every co-equal branch engaging in "jealousy" -- trying to dominate -- is countered by the other two. That is further established by enactment of statutes, which implement constitutional provisions. As to the sociopathy: the Founders expected citizens to be "virtuous" -- to accept responsibility for governing their own behaviors, and therefore limiting them in the interests of all. Unregulated capitalism, and the irresponsible attacks on informing the citizenry, are the abuses that result in chaos and worse. It is result of putting profits over people.

@kimobrien. Nixon resigned in August, 1974 -- a criminal "got" by the "Boomers". The DRAFT was ended -- thanks to the "Boomers". The environmental movement was mainstreamed by the "Boomers". US involvement in Vietnam ended in 1975 -- thanks to the "Boomers". The dollar was not based on the gold standard -- Nixon had changed that. The ignorance of the actual history involving the "Boomers" is astounding. Were there assholes in the "Boomer" generation? Certainly -- and as certainly as there are assholes in the subsequent generations that, ignorant of history, blame 'Boomers" for everything, including their own failings.

When the French were blown out at Dien Bien Phu, the US -- Eisenhower -- began putting in "advisors". It is the "New Left" "conclusion" from the 1960s that there was lying about the Tonkin Gulf incident. In fact it was inconclusive as what it was, let alone the apparent "cause" of it. You re repeating the far-left cliches about those years. I was alive, awake, and directly involved in the politics of the time. Yes, it is amazing that one CAN learn from older generations -- I knew that as a teenager, but it was natural, not amazing. I was born in 1948, and all the adults around me were still processing their experiences of the Depression and world war II. I was born into a military family; but in high school became anti-war. Then again, except for a tiny percentage of fools, those who've seen war are anti-war.

And that SOME humans learn to learn from their mistakes -- at the least to not make the same mistake again and again and again. When in my elementary school, teen years, and twenties, I didn't automatically REJECT ENTIRE prior generations and their views because that would be the ultimate in DUMBASSED. Where I agreed with my peers, parents, and grandparents, I agreed; where I disagreed I said so. All in all, my values are the same today as they were then: I believe in REASON -- which is a VERB -- not in fixed ideological distortions used as self-serving excuse-making, the only goal of which is to blame everyone else -- "Boomers" in this instance -- for one's situation, instead of TAKING INDIVUDAL RESPONSIBILITY for DOING something about it. There are other higher education technical programs that are both legitimate and which weed out those who can't cut it. That isn't the fault of the "system," the curricula, or the educational process. As I repeatedly note: those who know nothing about education baselessly consider themselves the best judge of it. And those who blame others for their failures are irresponsible; what they need is a few courses in philosophy -- especially the subset ETHICS, thereby learning that "individual responsibility" does not consist of blaming everyone and the world for one's own failures. Or using every available excuse to avoid challenging oneself because one is simply LAZY.

And that question applies across the board. Thus the invention, also, of the resume. A short order cook can be trained within a relatively short time on the job. But that does not qualify the person to be a high-level chef. Society has learned as a matter of necessity to make the distinctions you are challenging as being "unnecessary". That's precisely the same as the point I continue to make: those who have never been to college or university believing themselves qualified to judge the efficacy of college or university education. I've been seeing these bashers of college and university educations for decades. You had a choice of electives, and you chose that one because you figured you already knew it all about all the others. I had to take a year-long seminar in science -- based in genetics. I had no interest in it, but it was a requirement, so I decided I could "enjoy" it as long as I had to take it. I pulled an A. Sometimes we have no choice but to deal with unpleasant realities. We can do that, or we can try to avoid and bullshit our way around them. One chooses to grow, or one chooses to avoid.

But society needs the educated -- we do not live in the agrarian 18th century. And I had no support in attending college -- where I wanted to be beginning at 12. No one "pushed" or encouraged it. I had to do it on my own. And figuring I had to bust my ass just to survive it I got straight As. I would have got A+s if they'd existed. I've never heard or seen any pushing of college or university; but I have had university schoolmates who were there to "get a better job," and who settled for Bs because "good enough". The hunger for education I experienced can't be unique to me; so they were occupying seats which should have been occupied by the hungry for learning. Otherwise, if the MISGUIDED believe school after high school is about "better jobs," then attend vocational schools. Just cease bashing that with which you have ZERO experience: college and university -- else you sound envious.
