I would guess she told him she was breaking up with him, and he reverted to the, "If I can't have you, then no one else will." It isn't about "cowardice". Keep in mind that at the beginning John Walsh called for Laundrie to "off" himself -- which is irrational and stupid, as he was calling for the DESTRUCTION of the most crucial EVIDENCE in the case.
