There are two basic types of meditation: "relaxation," and insight. There are risks to insight meditation by dredging up traumatic information that one cannot accommodate, that overwhelms, thus causing "retraumatizing". In other words, the expectation of "bliss" or the like isn't guaranteed; in fact, quite the opposite.
This is warned about in such as "Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Safe and Transformational Healing" (NY: W. W. Norton, 2018), by David A. Treleaven.
This work is still preliminary, as, for example, Treleaven uses two similar terms used -- whether they are interchangeable or a distinction not clarified I can't determine. There is certainly a need for more work in this area.
