When he announced his candidacy for president, they followed him into the political realm. But everything to them is entertainment, so when he shits on the living room rug, they shit on the living room rug. The problem is that behind his fake image Trump has always been a grifter and a criminal. He used to love the courts when he was attacking, beating up on, and ripping off subcontractors. But that doesn't work when he's the defendant, especially in the criminal context, and his always and only politics is tried in the context where it is always and only law. "Justice and the Rule of Law are to be ABOVE politics." -- John Adams. He has been consistently LOSING in court because he hires lawyers who will present his hogwash as "argument" in courts of law. Roy Cohen was a mob lawyer who was ultimately disbarred and prosecuted for the same behaviors. And then when it came out that he was gay and had AIDs, Trump dropped him. Back to MAGA: to them everything is entertainment; and Trump loves the uneducated because they are so easy to bullshit. So he dupes them, and they send him their money for that "entertainment".
