  1. Giving a defendant notice at the beginning is MANDATORY -- REQUIRED BY LAW -- even if the defendant hasn't been contemptuous. You'd KNOW that if you actually followed the news on the trial, instead of simply demanding that DUE PROCESS and RULE OF LAW be IGNORED to satisfy you. Charging a defendant with contempt tends to be incremental up to the point that the defendant STOPS being an asshole. Typically that is just short of jailing for contempt because the defendant gets the message. In this instance it would likely begin with fines. But if those are insufficient to straighten Trump's behavior out then putting him in a cell would be in order. But that is up to not only the judge but also settled law.

  2.  @charleswettish8701  I assume you were a juvenile, and it was a first offense. And that you learned your lesson by NOT being jailed. So, yes: not everyone convicted of a felony is jailed. And some convicted of the lesser offense misdemeanor are jailed. Sentencing "guidelines" are guidelines -- limits over a range, but not hard-and-fast. And there are times that judges are wise, and even compassionate.

  5. Not always. The standard is that a misdemeanor is a year or less, a felony a year or more. But a defendant isn't always sentenced to jail in either situation.

  7.  @LRCW1  How many times must these facts be explained to you until you STOP REFUSING to LEARN: Contempt sanctions are INCREMENTAL -- they steadily INCREASE to the point that the defendant CEASES the contempt. Trump was fined several times until he STOPPED being an asshole. But this CRIMINAL trial in chief has begun, and he has already established a voluminous track record, including prior gag orders, on which the court can rely to short-circuit his contempt. This judge will therefore come down hard on him because he has already had sufficient warning and instruction, and has already flouted the courts' gag orders, so this court, this judge, needn't give him as many opportunities as happened prior.
