@df224 It has been reported that there were initially two date-ranges for the year of the vehicle. The second included 2016. They did identify the owner of the car (and that Kohberger changed the registration in Washington state after the murders). That was how they knew to arrange the two Illinois traffic stops in order to views of his hands. They also correctly identified the car as his in Pennsylvania via additional surveillance of him cleaning it.

@df224 The Moscow police brought in other law enforcement including state and FBI. They had the sense to bring in experienced professionals. Legal professionals know to thoroughly evaluate both prosecution and defense evidence and positions. As it's said: a lawyer never asks a question unless s/he already knows the answer.
