@s4 It requires focused attention on their thought patterns, and the gaps and conclusion-jumpings. What one does is restate their stated view with the gaps filled in. One is then working "with" them according to their "rules," but demonstrating how LOGICAL THOUGHT works. They can't simply reject it because it is THEIR view your are discussing. And they immediately experience the benefit and clarity that LOGIC gives to the issue. The fundamental problem is that they don't know 'how" to do LOGIC. That's what they need to learn. And that leads to THOUGHT -- CRITICAL EVALUATION of their BELIEFS. One can begin to ask if it makes sense to believe falsehoods if instead one is all about "truth".

@CMA418 Calling a person who isn't ignorant "ignorant'" is name-calling. Calling a person ignorant who IS ignorant is stating a fact. So how do YOU distinguish between the two? How do you correct another's incorrect belief? Does adhering to fact and logic have something to do with it?
8
@CMA418 So one should not be "critical" of them simply because they will distort the criticism and "respond" to it with self-justification?

It's the easiest thing to be a "conservative" in the US: simply adopt their anti-education/learning idiotology.

@skabuoy They need to be asked WHY one should ignore the rule of law if one is actually FOR rule of law.

Who said they are illegal? Consider the source of that claim.

@CMA418 I suggest you understand my comment about working with THEIR beliefs -- that gets THEM engaged. I am not saying one AFFIRMS their beliefs. They are singularly focused on their beliefs so are more than anxious to DISCUSS them. During the discussion one asks question to better understand their view -- and put them in different words -- LOGICALLY -- and asking questions about their reaction. I'm about engaging in the process of THINKING and CRITICAL THOUGHT. Is that too subtle for you?

@CMA418 I detailed how to deal in a way that isn't confrontational. It does not validate their erroneous views. What it does is critically evaluate their views in a way that engages them. One is "teaching" logic without making of it an issue. One must be focused -- it is surgical. One must LISTEN to the whole person, their whole expression. It isn't argument; it isn't heated; it is persuasive. It can include compliment and affirmation of whatever details -- fragments -- are true. Where one can agree, one does so; but one is not capitulating.

@CMA418 Provocation -- pushing buttons -- is click-bait.

And Walter Winchell was anything but a class act. But newspapers also had their equivalents. All the media do the same things -- so stop bashing newspapers as "victimizers" of radio.
1
@Gernhartd_Rainholzen The point is, as I made it, that all the various news media do the same things. All of them have always had serious news, "serious" opinion, and sleaze-mongering gossip. Winchell proves the point: both in newspapers and on radio. His career ended when he took it to TeeVee and viewers saw how freaky he was in behavior.

@captain_context9991 NATO was founded by the United States to stop the Europeans hundreds of years of starting wars -- two of which became world wars that sucked in the US. It has been successful in that. It was also established as the first line of defense of the United States -- as an alternative to AGAIN being the boots on the ground in Europe that saved Europe from itself and from historically-imperialist Russia. Trump falsely asserts that NATO is to pay the US to protect Europe. No: the member nations of NATO are required to spend a percentage of their own GDP on their own national defense. President Obama understood the purpose/s of NATO: when it came to Libya western Europe expected the US to take the lead -- a distortion of NATO's purpose caused by Republican belligerence. Obama made it clear: Libya is EUROPE'S front yar -- not the US's, though the US would support Europe taking the lead. So, yes: NATO serves to keep BOTH the US and the world safe from, in particular, Russian imperialism.

The qualification of the oath with "affirming" was added to state constitutions, and the Federal oath allows the same, around the time of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, with the First amendment separation of "religion" and gov't. It was also done to accommodate Quakers, who revere Christ but do not consider him or the "Bible" divinely inspired.

@Asmodis4 Klepper is making it more difficult than it actually is.

@nicosiadellairo1473 Should we laugh at the serious reality? Or should we engage with it constructively? What is the REPONSIBILITY of citizenship in a democracy that requires individual RESPONSIBILITY?
1
@dannmarceau And the assistant manager is assigned the task of counting how many seeds are put into a single bag.
1
@rbrown5518 the "logic" is the belief that wearing a "cowboy" hat -- even if not a "cowboy" -- makes one a macho manly-man. Apparently a LACK of sufficient sunlight on the bare human head eviscerates the ability to engage in logic. And did this guy assert that he went to college!?

@CMA418 Stop oversimplifying: there isn't only "Left" and "Right". The majority is MODERATE MIDDLE. And there are degrees of "Left" -- of center. And degrees of "Right" -- of center.
