  1. Fascinating, touching, and charming. More power to you, Aju! This reminds me of an anecdote I heard from an American friend of mine. Husband Austrian, business took them to Japan for ten years. Their two sons were born and raised there, and naturally spoke fluent Japanese. The family returned to Austria, and one evening were watching a puppet show here in Vienna, with an audience of mostly Japanese tourists, including children. My friend's sons were bored and started telling dirty jokes in Japanese. The tourist's children in the audience were amazed and called their parents' attention to the white boys speaking Japanese. And the parents couldn't hear that they were speaking Japanese. Only their children noticed. Well done. Cheers from rainy Vienna, Scott

  2. Not all German tourists are this disrespectful, but many of them are. Years ago, I was on vacation in a little town in Hungary, and a family of German tourists were berating the waitress, who was maybe fourteen, for not understanding their German. My Austrian wife and I, who also understood a little Hungarian, were able to sort things out. But some people simply have no respect.

She's American, lives here in Austria, but she lived in Japan for ten years and her two sons were born and grew up there. The Japanese children understood and were surprised, but their parents didn't even get that they were speaking Japanese. Shows that we grownups are often blinded by prejudices that our kids don't yet have.
